What do you think of this bill?

The California Assembly has already approved this bill that will prohibit stores from distributing bags (plastic and paper) to customers. Which means, if you don't bring your own bags to the grocery store, they can't give you one, you must BUY a re-usable bag or get your groceries home or find some other way because the store can not provide a single-use bag to you.

While I support the use of reusable bags to help save the planet and I bring my own to the store (most of the time), the part that gets me angry about this bill is that the government wants to create a new department and spent $1 MILLION dollars Shocked a year to regulate and enforce this!! And you know if they "estimate" it will cost a million dollars per year, it most likely will actually cost more.

Just what we don't need during this budget crises time--another unnecessary government program that we the taxpayers will have to pay for forever. California has a huge budget deficit, we don't need to spend money we don't have on something like this. Stores have been encouraging the use of re-usable bags and I notice more and more people using them. How about we continue to just let societal pressure do its job?

You can find a summary analysis of the bill here:

The bill now moving on to the Senate for their approval.  Let your state senator know how you feel about this.  Find their address here: http://www.senate.ca.gov/~newsen/senators/senators.htp  (click on "Your Senator" if you don't know who represents you and you can look it up based on your address).

I absolutely agree, this is not the time for this.  I am a big believer in re-usable bags, but I also re-use my so-called "single use" bags for things that would otherwise call for buying more bags, and always for situations where a reusable bag is not only not practical, but also not healthy (aka doggy waste, etc).

I firmly believe that changing society is more effective than legislating our lives (therefore taking away yet more of our freedoms every day).  Tell people what they can and can't do, they naturally want to do just the opposite.  Teach them why something is good or bad, they are much more likely to embrace the change!
